My eyes flew open.
I rolled onto my side and vomited. Endless waves of half congealed blood splashed onto the ground. I heaved until there was nothing left. Emptiness. Of the stomach, of the heart and of the mind.
Eeeuw, Jesus, what a mess.
“Well that was a waste” he said from behind me, “Soon we will have to hunt, the hunger will come back stronger”.
“Does this happen to everyone and…oh God, will it happen again?” I asked, hoping like hell that I would never feel like this again. Then a rush of mixed feelings washed over me which I thought was strange. In everything I’d ever read vampires didn’t ‘feel’ anything. I felt a lot of things and none of them were good right at this moment.
“It takes the body some time to… adjust” he responded with just a hint of distaste.
“Luca, you are no longer human, you are vampire, your humanity is gone but your body is still altering itself to your new form.” This he said a little more gently.
“You know my name? I can barely remember setting eyes on you before we left the bar.”
He chuckled and it almost sounded like a growl. “That was not the first time we met. The bar happened three nights ago but we had been together many times before that”.
My eyebrows shot up almost as though they were pulled like strings on a marionette. “We’ve met before tonight? I have no memory of that. How can that be?”
“You remember only what I allowed you to remember” he grinned, “I had to be sure you were…let me think, how to explain it”. He paused for a moment or two. “You were not chosen as ‘food’, if you were you would have been dead weeks ago and discarded. I was looking for a companion, immortality can be dull sometimes so every now and then we turn someone, but it has to be the right someone. I chose you because I find you… interesting”.
Me, interesting. Ha! Not even close. I live – or should I say lived – a very ordinary life. It struck me like a bolt of lightning. I’m not alive but I’m not dead. Anger, sadness and confusion all clashed inside my head. Emotions smashed against each other like metal on metal. Like battling gladiators.
I pulled myself up to my full height, thrust my chin out and strode over to him to demand an explanation, show him how pissed off I was. Instead, when I asked, “why?” it didn’t come thundering out like I meant it to. I sounded like a whiny three year old.
He completely ignored my question and asked one of his own. “Luca. That’s an unusual name. That was how you first came to my attention, when that annoying skinny blonde girl called to you from across the parking lot at the back of cinema three weeks ago. You don’t look to be of Greek descent, it’s of Greek heritage isn’t it?”
“Yes” I said and rolled my eyes, “but just because it’s a Greek name doesn’t make me Greek. It’s also a man’s name and in case you hadn’t noticed I’m not one of those either”.
“Oh don’t worry about that” he said with that annoying smirk back on his face, “that definitely did not escape my attention”.

Cheryl, what is some of your favourite vampire literature?
I am really liking your writing on this and I am looking forward to future instalments!
Cheryl – keep it coming . . .
Interesting! Can’t wait till the next part.
Bryn, I don’t know that I have a favourite. I loved Bram Stoker’s Dracula because it’s a great book and the first vampire story I’d ever read. At the moment I’m quite enamoured with the Charlaine Harris Sookie Stackhouse series of books that the show True Blood is based on.
Thanks Janee, The next one is coming up tomorrow!
Thanks Pop Doctor, there shall be quite a few more
