He spun on his heel and started to walk away. I stood motionless not knowing what to do next.  Is he leaving me here to fend for myself? Do I follow him?

After his body disappeared into the darkness of the surrounding trees I heard his voice. “Well are you just going to stand there?” I thought about this for a moment, actually thinking that might be the better option. This man…this thing…had turned me into something inhuman, something unspeakable, why should I follow him? The moment passed quickly as I realised that I had no idea of what was supposed to come next.  I don’t know how to be a vampire. I don’t WANT to be a vampire!

I started to jog in the direction he had walked. I had gotten only a few metres when an arm snaked out from behind a tree and grabbed me and then a fist slammed into my face. I saw stars but recovered quickly, thanks to my new found strength. The figure moved so fast I didn’t know which way to look or if I would be struck again. I leapt behind a log and fell into a crouch on full alert.

The noise was almost imperceptible. I’m certain I wouldn’t have heard it before… my change. I pivoted around with my leg extended hoping to knock whoever it was off their feet. Instead I felt a cold hard hand with a vice like grip grab my ankle and flip me backward and I slammed into the log that I thought had hidden me. It would have knocked the wind out of me, had I needed to actually breathe. Suddenly I felt no fear, just overwhelming anger. Who was doing this and where was Nate?

Now I was truly pissed off. I heard a low snarl and I realised the noise was coming from me. Then I heard the familiar chuckle and Nate stepped out from the all pervading darkness. He walked up to me and was standing so close that we were almost touching. “You have much to learn and very little time to learn it.” His voice was low and determined.

“That was you? You attacked me?” The anger roared out of me out of me and I lashed out and tried to hit him. He caught my fist mid throw and it felt like I had slammed into a brick wall. “Why?”

“Do you think it is only vampires who hunt humans?” he sneered, “there are humans and …others who hunt us as well. You need to always be alert. You need to use these new senses that you are developing or you may not last long.”

“I have already died once thanks to you, and you’ve made me into this thing.” I spat the words at him my anger taking over, “what makes you think I wouldn’t welcome real death now? Who asked me if I wanted to become one of you?” I paused and looked at him right in the eye, “you had no right. You’ve taken my life from me you bastard. I’d kill you myself if I knew how. Maybe I’ll stake you while you sleep!”

“You won’t.” That eyebrow was cocked again and the smirk was back. If I had a shovel I would have smashed his face in right then and there.

“You can choose to remain one of us or death for yourself when the time is right” and then a grin spread across his face.

“But now, we hunt.”
