The lovely Jason From Salty Popcorn brought this to my attention and I thought I’d share it with all of my little children of the night.
For those not familiar with the books, The Saga of Darren Shan set of 12 books is a vampire story with shades of Harry Potter thrown in for good measure. The books written by Darren Shan (real name Darren O’Shaughnessy) follow the story of Darren Shan, an ordinary normal human schoolboy until he and his best friend Steve get tickets to the Cirque Du Freak, a bizarre freak show featuring performers such as Hans Hands, Gertha Teeth, the Wolf Man and Rhamus Twobellies. In the midst of the ghoulish excitement, true terror raises its head when Steve recognises that one of the performers – Mr Crepsley – is in fact a vampire! Darren is coerced by the vampire Crepsley into becoming his assistant and a half-vampire.
The first trilogy of the set is Darren learning to accept his vampirism, the second trilogy moves on to his finding a vampire clan to seek their acceptance. In the third Darren learns he may have a larger role to play in the fate of the vampires (and of the world) than he had ever imagined and in the last of trilogy of the set he is forced to make many decisions, finally taking his destiny into his own hands and dealing with the consequences.
The vampires of the Darren Shan books have quite a number of differences to the traditional vampire stories. In appealing to a young adult audience the violence is more akin to Harry Potter than say the Sookie Stackhouse books. You don’t have to be young to enjoy this saga. If you are a fan of both genres these should really appeal.
For more information on the books visit darrenshan.com and take a peek, it’s well worth it. But for fans of the books you’re in for a real treat.

Sounds cool. I’d never heard of this series, but I’ll have to look into it. I kind of like the direction that young adult literature is headed. Sort of that surreal creepiness that I love.
Autism is a great cause.
Thanks!
I’d never heard of them either but I think it’s a must read for me! I love all things vampire and zombie and I adored the Harry Potter books so if it mixes both they sound like fun
i love the idea and the books but the 2nd generation covers look better.
